Parliament on Friday, January 13, 2023 unanimously approved Ing. Alfred Jalil Momodu as the new Deputy Director General (DDG) of the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) after he successfully went through an interview with the Committee of Appointments and Public Service.
Prior to his nomination by President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, Ing. Momodu was the Director of Operations Management Department at the SLRA since 2020.
Introducing the nominees in Parliament, the Leader of Government Business, serving as the Chairman of Committee of Appointments and Public Service, and representing Constituency 019 in Parliament, Honourable Mathew Sahr Nyuma, said Ing. Momodu’s years of experience in project management would help him to serve the Director General in improving the road sector.
The Member of Parliament for Constituency 082, and Chairman of the Works Committee, Honourable Bashiru Silikie, commended President Bio for continuing to appoint young peope to leadership positions. “I am very pleased with the appointment of Ing. Momodu. He is the first young person to be occupying that position in the SLRA”, he added.
Honourable Silikie encouraged the new DDG to work hard and bring other colleagues, including his previous contenders, on board for the success of SLRA.
He ceased the moment to advocate to the new Minister of Finance for an increment and timely disbursement of budgetary support to the road sector, as he noted that better roads contribute to the boosting of the economy and development in other sectors.
The Member of Parliament for Constituency 028, representing the Coalition for Change, Honourable Sahr Charles, said he was very satisfied with the professionalism of Ing. Momodu based on his previous interactions with him on road inspection missions and his responses to questions posed to him during a recent interview by members of the Appointment Committee.
The independent Member of Parliament for Constituency 001, Honourable Emilia Lolloh Tongi, commended the SLRA for its relentless work in ensuring that the Kailahun- Buedu Road becomes a reality after 60 years of promises by previous governments, and promised to have a close contact with the new DDG because of his integral role in road projects across the country.
Other MPs that contributed to the parliamentary debate before the approval of the nominees, including Honourable Veronica Kadie Sesay, Honourable Sahr Emerson Lamina, Honourable Ibrahim Tawa Konteh and Honourable Nenneh Lebbie all commended Ing. Momodu for his hardwork and humility.
Closing the debate, the Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Abass Bundu, acknowledged that Ing. Momodu and the other nominees succeeded in the parliamentary vetting based on their previous successes, as he noted that “nothing succeeds like success”.
Honourable Bundu congratulated the nominees on their appointments and encouraged them to work harder to meet the expectations of President Bio.
Ing. Alfred Jalil Momodu comes to the new position with over 20 years’ experience in Civil Engineering. He holds a Master of Science degree (with Merit) in Road Management and Engineering from the University of Birmingham and a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone.
He has risen through the ranks from an Assistant Engineer to his current position since he joined SLRA in 2002. His appointment came after the previous DDG retired in the latter part of 2022.
Ing. Momodu told the Committee of Appointment and Public Service that he will continue to support the Director General in the implementation of road development projects in the country.
